I’ve heard so freakin’ much about Lil’ Wayne, I had to overcome my predisposition towards rappers that use “Lil” in their name (it’s fucking stupid, OK?), and actually listen to this guy’s music. I know that he’s everywhere — literally on 120+ tracks last year. I’ve heard him in bars, at parties, haunting my dreams…
But still, who is this Weezy?? I had to find out. So I picked up Tha Carter III, his album from last year (also the top selling album of last year), and let my ears do the talking.
The verdict? Solid. Super cereally solid. I not only like how his style kinda goes all over the place — fast-paced rapping, slow croons, a bit of singing, even some well-done auto-tuned robot guy stuff (and I hate that shit). It’s raspy, cocky, and his lyrics are awesome. This song in particular, “Let the Beat Build”, has been SO stuck in my head, it’s crazy.
As I hit the kill switch…That’s how you let the beat build, BITCH!

So my final judgement is leaning towards liking the Weezy. I think just by the sheer number of songs this guy does, it’s difficult to not like him. But after hearing this album, I got a lot more respect for him. Look for more picks to come off this album, they are certainly ripe for the picking.
