Crisis averted. Awhile ago, I tearfully wrote about one of my favorite indie groups which I thought had bit the dust. They’re website was down and so were my spirits. But today I randomly checked back in, and not only are they still around, they’ve got a new album out.
The band is Cold Duck Complex — perhaps the most shining picture of musical fusion I’ve ever come across, certainly in the last decade. Bouncy jazz and ferociously-quick hip hop are fused together with a dancefloor mindset. Then they’ll get gritty and guttural for something you swear is a reincarnation of Rage. Then they’ll take a 4 minute break to hit you with an instrumental dose of jazz concerto.
I know you’re thinking “what the fuck are you talking about? That does. not. make. sense.” I agree. But such is Cold Duck Complex. They pull it off with the same natural ease of Courtney Love showing her minge. And with their new set, they seem to have frayed the musical boundaries even further.

I’m not quite sure in what capacity the band stands — they’ve always been a sporadically touring off-and-on unit. And I actually think this Freshwater thing is maybe a new amalgam of CDC featuring even more artists and musicians. I’m not sure. But I just got 13 fresh new tracks of the duck and whatever they’re doing, it’s working.
